Coaches demand action against referees

KATHMANDU, June 15: Controversies over referees’ decisions are not new in Martyrs Memorial Red Bull A Division League. Coaches are often heard complaining about referees’ decision in the post match conferences and demanding action against them.

All Nepal Football Association ANFA claims that they have been taking action against referee for their mistakes but coaches refuse to believe it. Coaches claim that the ANFA is reluctant to take action against referees as there are only a few of them in the country.[break]

After a competitive match between Samsung Jawalakhel Youth Club and Ranipokhari Corner Team (RCT) on Tuesday at the Dasharath Stadium, coaches of both teams complained about referees and assistant referees’ decisions.

“It was a goal when Bikram Limbu’s shot went behind goal-line in the 43rd minute before rebound. However, assistant referee could not judge it,” claimed Jawalakhel coach Kishor Karki.

On the other hand, RCT coach Madhu Karki protested referee Sudish Pandey’s decision to award penalty to Jawalakhel in the last minute of regular time. “Referee’s decision was erroneous. My defender had made a clean tackle but the referee’s decision cost us a match,” argued Karki.

“Perhaps, awarding penalty was to rectify his earlier decision of not allowing Limbu’s goal in the first half,” said Madhu Karki.

Earlier on the day, Saraswati Club’s Pakistani player Mohmood complained that assistant referee Binod KC hurled obscenities after the former appealed against the referee’s “wrong decision”.  “They made several wrong decisions and booked our players for no apparent offense,” said Saraswati assistant coach Pradeep Nepal.

All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) later warned Mohmood for his unsporting behavior but Nepal claimed that KC had made obscene gestures first.

ANFA slapped a three-match ban on Saraswati official Sikshit Parajuli after the incident.

Earlier, Bauddha Football Club had officially complained about referee Bikash Mahat after its match against Mega Three Star Club. Likewise, Laxmi Hyundai Manang Marshyangdi Club’s officials and coach were heard several times complaining against referees.

“Every time clubs complain about referees in verbal or written form, ANFA gives assurance of taking action against referees, who take wrong decisions but we see the same referee officiating the very next match,” complained Madhu Karki.

“There are very few referees and because of that ANFA is not taking action,” said Karki.

Referee Inspector and former FIFA referee Surendra Shikhrakar accepts that there are very few referees to conduct top-flight league but denies Karki’s claim of not taking action.

“We have taken actions against referees but actions taken against them are not made public,” said Shikhrakar.

He suggests club officials and coaches to develop sporting culture. “Clubs are not accepting their defeat and blaming referees every time,” said Shikhrakar.

ANFA General-secretary Dhirendra Pradhan argued that they have been taking action against referees for their wrong decisions.
