KATHMANDU, Sept 21: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Wednesday requested the Supreme Court (SC) that all accused of the multi-million rupee Sudan scam should be taken into custody, pending final verdict.

CIAA request to the SC comes at a time when former police chiefs allegedly involved in the scam have moved to the apex court demanding that the bail amount slapped by the Special Court against them should be reduced.[break]

"We wrote to the SC requesting it to issue an order to arrest and keep the accused behind the bars," said CIAA Secretary Bhagwati Kafle adding, "We requested the apex court to implement our chargesheet as we are not satisfied with the Special Court decision to release the accused on bail."

The national anti-graft body had demanded in its chargesheet that all Sudan scam accused should be kept in custody until the final verdict of the court.

"The Special Court should have sent Sudan scam accused to jail rather than asking bail amount from them," Secretary Kafle explained, adding, "There is no question of reducing the bail amount since our main demand is yet to be implemented."

CIAA has also requested the apex court not to reduce the bail amount as sought by former police chiefs.

The Special Court had sought bail amounts from 23 Sudan scam accused while others were released against general date.

CIAA had filed a graft case against 34 police officials accusing them of embezzling about Rs 290 million while designing, purchasing and supplying armored personnel carriers (APCs) and other logistics for the Nepali peace-keepers deployed in Darfur, Sudan.

"We have a right to request SC as per the existing legal provisions," Secretary Kafle said adding, "CIAA can request the SC once it receives information that someone has moved to the apex court against the decision of the commission."
