CIAA to deploy team at TIA to curb anomalies

KATHMANDU, Dec 15: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has decided to keep Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) under its surveillance from Wednesday for a month.

The CIAA has stated that it will keep close watch on the activities at TIA because complaints of irregularities by TIA officials has continued despite its repeated warnings."As the TIA authority remained reluctant to stop anamolies in service delivery and curb irregularities, the anti-graft body has decided to intervene and monitor each and every activities of the TIA. The sole aim of the CIAA's surveillance is to make the officials more responsible toward service seekers and curb corruption," said Krishna Hari Puskar, spokesperson and joint-secretary of the CIAA.

He said around 15 officials of the anti-graft body in two shifts will be deployed daily from Wednesday for a month to monitor each and every activities at the TIA. "If any official is found involved in irregularities or not carrying out their responsibilities properly, they will face action," he added.

He said the anti-graft body will also keep an eye on activities carried out by private sector on the TIA premises. "We will watch over not only the govenrment officials but also the taxi cabs and shops operating on the TIA premises. If they are found cheating passengers, then we will instruct the authorities concerned to take action," he added.

According to the CIAA, the CIAA team deployed at the TIA will be led by a joint-secretary.

A press statement issued by the CIAA on Tuesday stated that it has decided to keep TIA under its surveillance for a month after it received complaints in large numbers about security lapses, poor coordination among concerned authorities, lack of proper utilization of physical infrastructure at TIA, lapses in customs and immigration services, the poor maintenance of toilets and other facilities, and smuggling from the airport, among other things.
