Talking to Republica, Kesab Shrestha, coordinator of Plastic Bags Free Civilian Campaign, shared that they are holding discussion Sunday on what kind of punishment should be given to those violating the ban. [break]
"The ban will come to effect from August 29 and anyone found violating the ban will be fined," said Shrestha.
"All shops, groceries and businesses should stop using plastic bags from August 29," added Shrestha.
On Friday, the campaign held a march in Dharan on Friday. There was good participation of representatives of various organizations and schools. The march started from the playground of Public Higher Secondary School and concluded in Dharan Municipality office.
"On Friday, we identified the shops selling plastic bags and requested for their support to make the campaign successful," said Shrestha.
An an alternative to plastic bags, Dharan Municipality in coordination with Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry has manufactured cloth bags. "Around 5,000 cloth bags are ready by now," informed Shrestha. “
"The cloth bags will be handed over to the Revenue Department of the Municipality Office. Only those who pay the municipal tax will get the bag, which will have house number and the name of the house owner printed," said Shrestha. Each bag has been priced Rs 24.
Chairperson of Dharan Municipality Office, Bhoj Raj Khatiwada, hoped that locals will cooperate to make the campaign successful.
"If people embrace the bright side of this campaign and support us, there will be no need to take legal action," said Shrestha.
