Addressing the topic of modern day slavery, Trish Mahoney, Deputy Chief of Mission, US Embassy, said, “Slavery is not a thing of the past. Human trafficking hurts all of us because it reduces our fellow human beings, and thus us, to commodities and goods.”
She further stated that human trafficking deprived people of their basic rights and that it is a persistent evil. The good news, she said pointing to the fact that one thousand new women police officers will be brought in, was that Nepal is making progress.
Mohana Ansari, lawyer and women rights activist and current member of National Women’s Commission, spoke about the link between trafficking and marginalization, highlighting the importance of citizenship rights for marginalized communities such as the Badi community.
Taking the issue of citizenship rights forward, Usha Kala Rai, former coordinator of the Constituent Assembly Women’s Caucus, said that it was time that women, like men, should have the right to issue citizenship against their name to their children.
Dr Kiran Rupakhety, Under Secretary and Upendra Prasad Adhikari, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Child, Women and Social Welfare, were also present at the event. A documentary ‘Not My Life’ was also screened.
