Porters and helpers with mountaineering expeditions have alleged that a syndicate system is at work while climbing mountain peaks like Mt. Island, Mt. Lobuche, Mt. Cholachel and others in the district.[break]
They fear that this system is taking away their work from them. Concerned as they are from this ´syndicate system´ in practice in mountaineering, they have submitted a nine-point charter of demands to the bodies concerned. They have also issued a 21-day ultimatum to the authorities to fulfill their demands.
The mountaineering labourers have alleged that the local hotel entrepreneurs are operating the mountaineering expeditions by booking these expeditions directly from the trekking and mountaineering expeditions based in Kathmandu.
They have warned of phase-wise strike if their demands are not addressed.
Their demands include, among others, removing the ´syndicate system´ in mountaineering expeditions to various peaks, the locals stopping the practice of collecting money from the expedition members beforehand they eat their meals, the trekking and mountaineering entrepreneurs should stop mentioning in their business cards and hoarding boards that guides and assistance guides are available for hire from their firms and providing food and accommodation facilities to the Nepali labourers also at local hotels.
The present practice is that the Namche Expeditions Pvt. Ltd. provides permission for mountaineering. The labourers allege that the expedition is practicing syndicate system by taking profit from them.
