Bushfires destroy two dozen forests

SURKHET, April 28: With the increasing summer heat, wildfires have destroyed more than 24 community forests at various Village Development Committees (VDCs) in Surkhet district.



More than a dozen community forests at Ghoreta, Agrigaon, Bajedichaur, Dandakhali, Kaprichaur and Rakam VDCs in the eastern belt of the district have been destroyed by fire.



Similarly, over a dozen community forest at Gadhi, Uttarganga, Latikoili, Babiyachaur, Staakhani, Taranga and Gutu VDCs adjoining Birendranagar Municipality have been destroyed by wildfires.



The forest fires are believed to have destroyed valuable medicinal herbs and forest resources as well as a large number of wildlife.



Resin and turpentine collectors have also suffered losses running into millions of rupees as the resin collected by them and kept in the forest has been destroyed by fire.
