KATHMANDU, March 15: If the smoke and dust clogged air of Kathmandu has got the best of you, here is your chance to paint yourself with the rich Newari traditions at Bungmati, a classic 16th century Newari village.

Located 10 kilometers away from Kathmandu, near Patan, Bungmati is a small and lively village that showcases old mud and brick houses with aankhi jhyals, kacchi roads, cattle, sukuls, crafted pots and wooden crafts. [break]

Women spinning wool, weaving, knitting and hand-sewing and men carving wood and making sculptures are a common sight.

These locals have preserved their years old tradition untouched by urbanization.

They warmly welcome visitors with cheerful smiles and offer great bargain for their local product. Their side offers and sweet talk will definitely delight you.

Huge Rato Machhendranath Temple, of their local deity Bunga-dya, gracefully stands in the centre of the village. Another Newari village, Khokana is a short walk across the paddy fields of Bungamati.

So if you want a break but your budget doesn’t allow you for lavish trips, Bungmati is just the place to be.

How to get there: One can either drive their car or bike or opt for local transport like micro bus or bus from Patan Bus Park.
