KATHMANDU, April 6: The 16th edition of the Asian Games (Asiad) is round the corner with less than seven months left for its commencement but the National Sports Council (NSC) has not been able to make preparations for the Games due to lack of budget.

South Asian Games (SAG) medalists are generally selected for Asiad with hope that they might win medals. This time too, NSC has kept SAG medalists in the priority list. [break]

“We have given top priority to SAG medalists as we have hopes from them of winning medals in the Asiad,” said Min Krishna Maharjan, acting treasurer of NSC and Asiad preparation committee´s coordinator. “But we haven´t started the preparation yet due to lack of budget,” he added.

Another obstacle for the preparation, according to Maharjan, is that the selection of games, which Nepal will represent in the Asiad, has not been finalized. NSC has plans to include 10 to 14 games among which fall karate, taekwondo, boxing, wushu, athletics, judo, shooting, badminton, weightlifting, table tennis, wrestling, archery, chess and golf.

“The preparation will begin once the selection of games is done,” said Maharjan. He said NSC´s board meeting on Saturday is expected to shed light on this issue.

“There isn´t much time left. We are already late for the preparation. In order to bring good results we must not cause any delay,” said Maharjan, indicating that NSC is in favor of preparation at the earliest. He also said that Nepal will not participate in team events of the Asiad to be held in Guangzhou, China in November due to lack of funds.

The Asiad Preparation Committee of NSC is said to have demanded Rs 41,775,600. The committee that includes NSC Member Secretary Hari Babu Chaudhary and members Partha Sarathi Sen Gupta, Lal Kumar Lama and Samim Miyan Ansari has already finalized the preparation plans.

According to Maharjan, the selection of players will be held from district level to national level in the first phase and the players will be kept in closed camp. There is a plan to send all the selected players for training abroad three months before the Asiad.

“We have sorted out good scientific plans for the preparation but we need budget for that. There is no meaning in saying there wasn´t enough training if the budget is not released in time. We have asked for budget in time and the preparation will begin as soon as we receive the budget,” said Maharjan.
