Breakthrough in a week: Big 3

KATHMANDU, Feb 25: Top leaders of three major political parties -- UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML -- have promised a major breakthrough in the peace process and constitution drafting within a week.



During a three-party meeting held at the residence of Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal in Lazimpat Friday morning, the leaders reached an understanding to settle by next week all the existing differences seen in the integration of Maoist combatants and constitution drafting process. [break]



The meeting has assigned the leaders of the three big parties to do necessary home work to resolve the disputes related to the peace process, constitution drafting and formation of various commissions as per various agreements in the past.



"We are hopeful that we will reach an important agreement within the coming week," said UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, who attended the meeting on behalf of the UML.



Nepal told media persons that he has been tasked with finding solutions to the differences seen in constitution drafting process while Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has been entrusted with identifying the meeting points on issues related to integration of Maoist combatants.



Likewise, NC President Sushil Koirala will work out a proposal on the formation of various commissions as agreed in the past.



The top leaders are scheduled to hold next meeting on Saturday. "We have agreed to come up with proposals for addressing the issues during our meeting scheduled for tomorrow," he further said.



The meeting of top leaders was held as per the understanding, reached Thursday during a three party meeting at the prime minister´s official residence in Baluwatar, to expedite inter-party meeting at the level of top leaders for consensus.



The Friday´s meeting was attended by Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, Maoist Chairman Dahal, NC President Koirala and the UML leader Nepal.



The leaders of three parties have identified various five agenda including peace process, constitution drafting, national consensus government, formation of various commissions including Truth and Reconciliation Commission and miscellaneous issues such as exploring alternatives to fill local bodies.



The leaders have agreed to first settle the issues of peace process and constitution drafting before holding discussions on the formation of national consensus government.



The main opposition NC and another major opposition party UML have been maintaining that only successful conclusion of peace process can pave way for the formation of such a government.
