The Eastern Regional Office of the department had filed a complaint at District Administration Office (DAO), Jhapa on April 8 to scrap the license of Eastern Pani Udyog (EPU) after moss and dust particles were found in bottled water produced by the company. [break]
Earlier in March, the department had instructed EPU to improve the quality of its products. “But the EPU did not take measures as directed by the department,” said Pramod Koirala, Senior Research Officer at the department. “This led us to resort to the extreme step,” Koirala told myrepublica.com.
All bottled-water manufacturing industries are required to undergo a number of water processing phases.
“We asked Chief District Officer (CDO) of Jhapa to confirm whether EPU has been closed down,” Upendra Roy, Regional Chief of the Department. But the CDO is yet to respond, he added.
When contacted, Jhapa CDO Yadav Koirala easily passed the buck to Ilam District Administration Office (DAO). He said that complaint was filed at Ilam DAO and not his office. The owner of EPU could not be contacted for comments.
Meanwhile, the DoFTQC on Tuesday seized 701 kg Ghee of questionable quality seized from Sagarmatha Butter and Ghee Industry and Danchhi Binayak Dairy Industry in Kathmandu.
“The owners of the two industries had been selling its products claiming it was pure,” Koirala, Senior Research Officer at the department, said. “But, the ghee was not pure. It was mixed with vegetable ghee.”
