NEW DELHI, Aug 1:  Police say a bombing in a busy market in India´s remote and violence-wracked northeast has killed five people and wounded four others.

Police official Balram Singh said Monday´s explosion took place in Sangakpham Bazaar in Imphal. That´s the capital of Manipur state.[break]

He said the bomb was placed on a motor scooter.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the blast.

At least 17 separatist groups are active in Manipur state and often stage hit-and-run attacks.

The rebels claim the local population is ignored by the federal government in New Delhi. Most locals are ethnically closer to groups in Myanmar and China than to the rest of India.
