BIRGUNJ, Nov 4: Birgunj has remained tense since the last three days due to demonstrations staged by Madhesi protestors after security personnel attempted to remove the blockage at Nepal-India border at Raxual on Monday.
The curfew order that local administration enforced after Monday’s incident continued on Wednesday. Due to the three-day-long curfew, locals have been terrified, according to Jogindra Mahato, a local entrepreneur.
“I cannot go to work during curfew,” he said. “If the situation doesn’t improve, it will be difficult for us to survive,” Mahato added.
Following use of force against the protestors who were staging sit-in at the border and death of an Indian national in police firing on Monday, irate locals and cadres of the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) defied the curfew on Wednesday and staged demonstrations at several places in Birgunj. On Monday, security personnel had removed protestors from the bridge and torched their tents and tarpaulins.
