Though the municipality beat other municipalities in the government assessment, the municipality is still lacking in physical infrastructure. [break]

“We are far behind in terms physical infrastructure. Moreover, we do not have adequate financial resources for big town development projects. This is why we have proposed new projects in a bid to make the city more beautiful and attract more tourists,” said Chief of Municipality Purushottam Subedi.

Hundreds of tourists visit the area and more tourists could be attracted if the city builds proper infrastructure to make the place more tourist-friendly.

Though the government´s assessment was made public two weeks ago, the municipality informed about it to the local political leaders and chiefs of government offices only recently.

As per the municipality´s proposal, Charikot would be developed as a tourist destination in the first phase. “As Charikot is a tourist destination, we have proposed to develop proper physical infrastructure in Charikot to make it tourist-friendly.” We will primarily focus in areas such as widening of roads and drainage management, among others.

According to the municipality office, the road from Charangekhola to Ghyawapani would be upgraded in the first phase. Similarly, the road from Ghyawapani to Satdobato would be upgraded as a two-lane road. The Satdobato-Pashupati Chowk section would also be widened and blacktopped. “We will coordinate with the Road Division Office, Charikot for the implementation of the projects,” said Subedi, adding that the municipality would start the projects from next month. He said a garden would also be developed on either side of the upgraded roads.

Similarly, the municipality has also decided to blacktop the road linking Charikot with Kalinchowk Bhagwati, Sherabosi, Mahankal and Nagdaha. “We have been looking for funds,” said Subedi, adding, “We have also decided to declare Bhimeshwor temple plastic-free zone and have already demanded budget from the ministry of environment.” The municipality has also urged locals to contribute funds for the proposed projects.
