CHITWAN, Aug 23: A struggle committee formed by the Bharatpur Drinking Water Management Board on Thursday padlocked the office of Nepal Drinking Water Corporation (NDWC) affecting regular office activities.

The committee, which was formed on August 14, has demanded that the management of drinking water be handed over to the board as agreed two years ago. [break]

The drinking water project in Bharatpur municipality was completed under loan assistance of Rs 260.60 million from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). As per the agreement, the NDWC was supposed to hand over management of the drinking water facility to the board.

According to Ram Raj Poudel, coordinator of the struggle committee, NDWC has still not handed over the management of drinking water project to the board.

“We had issued an ultimatum to NDWC to hand over management by August 21, but they have been turning a deaf ear to our demands. We have been forced to take stringent measures now,” said Badri Adhikari, a member of the board.

As per the agreement, the board should repay the ADB´s loan with 8 percent interest within 15 years.

“But since we don´t have the management in our hands, we might not be in a position to pay the loan on time,” said executive director of the board Sila Ram Poudel.
