The legendary Nepali Adikavi (First Poet) Bhanubhakta Acharya is known well in the Nepali society of Assam, one of the major Nepali-speaking states in northeast India.

More than 2.5 million Nepali-speaking population of the state celebrates the birthday of Bhanubhakta which falls on July 13 (Asad 29) with a daylong cultural and literary agenda.[break]

Even though Bhanubhakta was born in Nepal 197 years ago, Nepali literature and culture isn’t confined to Nepal alone but it is spread to those all places where this peace-loving race as a whole lives.

Presently, Bhanu Jayanti is not merely celebrated as the birthday of this great epic writer, but it is celebrated as the cultural festivals like Bada Dashain or Tihar in Assam and other northeastern states of India.

Like in Assam, Bhanu Jayanti is celebrated equally with enthusiasm in Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur where the populations of Nepali-speaking Indian citizens are not less.

In Assam itself, various social and students’ organizations have now geared up to celebrate the Jayanti with a daylong agenda, In some places, the birth anniversary is also celebrated with two days’ busy agenda which includes Ramayana Paath, open discourse on Bhanubhakta’s contributions to Nepali language and literature, the Bhanu Jayanti as a symbol of cultural unity and identity of this great race, competitions on folklore, folk dances in traditional Nepali attires, literary competitions, quiz competitions, among other events.

The Asom Nepali Sahitya Sabha, one of the premier literary organizations of the Nepali-speaking people of Assam, in association with its district- and Anchal-level committees, is learnt to have decided to celebrate Bhanu Jayanti in more than 50 places of the state with a daylong agenda while another premier Nepali literary organization, the Nepali Sahitya Parishad, Assam, is also celebrating this auspicious day in major Nepali-speaking areas of the state with a day of various agendas.

In the same way, the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU) is also preparing the celebrations in some notable places of the state, while the Assam Gorkha Sammelan, another premier social organization, is also celebrating the Jayanti in Guwahati, the state capital of Assam, and other parts of the state.

It is to be noted that the Asom Nepali Sahitya Sabha is also geared up to celebrate its 19th Foundation Day on August 19 and 20 as Nepali Bhasha Manyata Divash, to be centrally held at the Dhiraimajuli Village in Sonitpur District with a two-day programs.

It is worth mentioning here as well that the Government of Assam had declared the Bhanu Jayanti as one of the restricted paid holidays for the state government employees of Assam some 20 years ago, which is still in practice.

The state’s Nepali-speaking government officials enjoy the paid holiday by attending the functions related to Bhanu Jayanti every year.
