A recent meeting between the Nepal Police Traffic Office, Kathmandu Metropolis and the District Administration Office decided to drive out encroachments that are threatening the status of the area as a world heritage site.
According to Ganesh KC, chief of Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu, five illegally operated parking lots inside the monument area and others in surrounding areas will be removed with the implementation of the new rules.
This move by the local administration comes at a time when the government has already sanctioned a project to build a massive underground parking lot at Tundikhel.
The action plan may soon be accompanied by implementation by Kathmandu Metropolis of a recent verdict by the apex court to ban the evening market from the monument area. "We have been working with the metropolis to implement the verdict," KC added.
The local administration says the move will help promote tourism on the eve of Nepal Tourism Year 2011.
As per the plan, the Basantapur area will also be banned for carts used by peddlers, who will have to obey new regulations on movement within designated places. "Even beggars, hawkers and guides will follow distinct codes," KC added.
