KATHMANDU, Aug 4: BarCamp 2011, a gathering of people in which the participants have total autonomy to lead the event to wherever they want, is being held on August 6 at Staff College, Jawalakhel.

According to the website www.barcamp.org.np, BarCamp is an “unconference” which is organized by attendees, for attendees. There is no audience, only participants.[break]

The first BarCamp was held in California in 2005. Since then, it has been held in over 350 cities around the world. It was held in Kathmandu for the first time on August 8, 2009. BarCamp is being held in Kathmandu for the third time this year.

Last year’s Barcamp included the screening of an experimental short film, showcasing of a computer gadget/robot made by one of the participants, a discussion on the importance of art and the benefits of hemp as a form of clothing.

“It’s a very good platform for young people from all walks of life to share ideas,” said Chirag Bangdel, artist who gave a presentation “Why Art?” in the previous BarCamp.

“In the last session, I talked about the importance of art and why we need it,” said Bangdel.

He said that BarCamp is an innovative, intellectual and energetic gathering of young minds.

“There are people talking about all sorts of things, so you get exposed to a lot of wonderful things,” said he. “It’s also an opportunity to meet interesting people and you also get to learn about what people are doing when the country is at a standstill.”

BarCamp is an ad-hoc unconference – the opposite of a conference. The program usually witnesses discussions, demos and interaction from attendees.

It is not centered on an agenda with only the host making a presentation or a speech. The discussions are not limited to just one topic, but a wide range of topics.

There will be no limitation as to the method of speaking. Projectors will be available for Powerpoint presentations but one can use almost any way as well as any content while making the presentation.

One can also choose the level of interactivity they want during the presentation.

BarCamps are organized and publicized largely through the web. Anyone can initiate a BarCamp, using the BarCamp wiki.

Social Media – Your key to FORTUNE, Mobile Social Networking Nepal, Hackers Chautari, and Social Media for Social Change, and Disrupting Education the Open Source way are some of the registered sessions for this BarCamp.

To register for your session or for a session, log on to at barcamp.org.np. Those who have registered online also have to register in person at the venue.
