Now the head of the global body is likely to visit Nepal in April, provided Nepal finalizes the event, multiple sources told Republica on Tuesday. [break]
“He is not coming in March because Nepal has not made preparations,” said an informed source.
Last week, Ban had a meeting with Nepal´s ambassador to UN Gyan Chandra Acharya and had keenly inquired how the event is being developed.
Member Secretary of Lumbini Development Trust (LDT), Rajendra Bahadur Thapa told Republica that local office of UNESCO has informed him that Ban would visit Nepal in April.
Chairman of the government-formed High Level Steering Committee (HLSC) for the Development of Greater Lumbini Pushpa Kamal Dahal had extended an invitation to the chief of the global body last November.
Accepting the invitation then, Ban had told a delegation led by Dahal that he would visit Nepal to attend the event in March, while proposing moral and political support for the development of Lumbini.
But, as of Tuesday, the preparations for the event have not even started. Concerned government agencies --Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Ministry of Culture, Constituent Assembly and Federal Affairs and LDT-- do not even know that the event is going to be organized in Nepal.
“We have no information about the event,” said Narayan Regmi, spokesperson at the Ministry of Culture, Constituent Assembly and Federal Affairs. So did LDT officials. “As of today, we know nothing about the event,” said member secretary Thapa.
As Ban is keenly following the development of the event, Dahal has called a meeting of HLSC for March 3 to discuss the proposed event.
