After the meeting, Baidya and general secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa met Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal at his residence in Lazimpat and briefed the party chief about their decisions.
“We informed the chairman about our decision. We clearly told him that the party unity depended on the type of the mode of state restructuring adopted by the CA,” a key leader from the faction quoted Baidya as saying.
“Dahal assured us that he will take firm stance on the identity-based 14-province model and full proportional electoral system until the last hour.”
According to the leaders, Dahal also told Baidya that he didn’t float the 10-province model wholeheartedly before Nepali Congress and CPN UML leaders. According to him, he did so just as a tactics.
“I am not going to give up our party’s positions. You just observe and remain patient and you will find the result by May 27”, another party CC member quoted Dahal.
Baidya and Thapa went to Dahal’s residence after lawmakers from the faction pressed them to meet Dahal and caution him not to give up all the party’s agendas while making compromise with other parties.
“Full proportional electoral system and identity based 14 provinces is our bottom line,” said lawmaker Santosh Budha Magar, who is from the Baidya faction. Lawmakers from Baidya faction believed that the parliament to be given continuity after the promulgation of new constitution will have the authority only to amend the constitution and nothing more that. “Therefore there is no point of relying on the transitional parliament,” said a leader.
Meanwhile, a meeting of the standing committee members from the Dahal faction on Friday decided to hold a protest programs against the Thursday’s Supreme Court verdict.
