KATHMANDU, Nov 28: The 8th KCM Inter College Band Competition came to an end on Saturday night with Malpi International College’s band Arrowheaded Triangle bagging the first prize.

An alternative rock band inspired by international bands such as Dream Theatre, Extreme, among other classical rocks bands, Arrowheaded Triangle rocked the massive crowd at Bhrikuti Mandap with their original composition titled after their band name, Arrowheaded Triangle. [break]

They also won the Best Bassist and Best Lead Guitarist positions.

Republica sat down for a talk with these young talented musicians.

Introduce all the band members and what do they do in the band?

We have Saujan Sangraula, 25, is the vocalist. Deep Bikram Singh, 19, is the lead guitarist, and Tshewang Tamang, 21, is our bassist, and Surin Aryal, 16, is on the drums.

How the band was initially started?

We (Saujan and Deep) have been playing together for a long time now, almost 7-8 years. We have been musically attuned. We met Tshewang and Surin recently and decided to put together a musical project.

Did you think that you would win the KCM ICBC?

We had no idea that we would win the competition. It never even crossed our minds. We just entered the competition to try and put on a good show for the audience and the judges and surprisingly we ended up winning.

How do you feel now that you are winners?

We’re extremely happy. We’ve been putting so much of our efforts into music and it feels amazing to finally get something in return. It’s a very good feeling to work so hard and get amazing results.

How long have you guys been playing?

All of us have been involved in music for eight years now.

What does music mean to you?

Music is something that joins all of us together. It just feels wonderful to stand on stage and watch this huge crowd of people enjoying music. Music brings everyone together and connects us all. I guess that the most important part of music is the ability to touch all kinds of people and bring us all together.

How do you feel when you’re playing up on stage?

There are a lot of Heavy Metal musicians and going up on stage with a different kind of music, and it felt amazing. We were proud of being different from the other bands and more proud of the fact that we impressed the judges and the audience with our different music.

What future plans do you have as a band?

We are all students and it’s kind of difficult for us put time to music. But we’ll still be playing together at concerts. We don’t have any plans of going commercial by launching an album, but we’re recording demos.

What do you plan to do with the winnings?

We’ll spend a significant part of the winning on equipment for the band and the rest we’ll spend on partying.
