KATHMANDU, Jan 18: Nepal Press Union (NPU) has demanded that the government immediately arrest those involved in the gruesome murder of journalist Dekendra Thapa in Dailekh.

An NPU mission, which had reached Dailekh after the investigation process over the murder was halted due to the order of Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and Attorney General Mukti Pradhan, made the demand. [break]

The four-page report prepared by the mission after holding talks with stakeholders in the Dailekh has stressed the need to exert pressure on the government to bring the culprits to the book. The mission concluded that journalists as well as civil society should continue with the protest as there are high chances that the investigation and prosecution of those behind murder may be left halfway.

Addressing the conference, NPU Vice President Hemanta Kafle also asked the government to immediately arrest and prosecute those involved in murder of other journalists during the conflict period.

“The remarks of PM Bhattarai that the investigation and prosecution of persons involved in such crimes could derail peace process are aimed at promoting the culture of impunity in the country,” he said.

On the occasion, NPU General Secretary Shiva Lamsal informed that NPU will continue with various forms of protests as per the recommendation of NPU missions until the guilty of the gruesome murder of journalist Thapa are brought to justice.
