Army lifts national hockey title

BIRGUNJ, Feb 9: Tribhuvan Army Club lifted the title of Second National Hockey Tournament that concluded in Birgunj on Saturday. Army defeated Mid-western Region 1-0 in tie-breaker in the final match held at Adarshanagar stadium in Birgunj.



Neither side was able to score in the regular 70 minutes. The match was decided through tie-breaker after the added 14 minutes also ended in a goalless draw.

The champion team bagged a purse of Rs 50,000 while the runner-up received Rs 30,000. [break]



Earlier in the day, Far-western Region edged past Western Region 1-0 in the third place playoff with a lone goal from Ramesh Pakhrin. Far-western was awarded Rs 20,000.



Army´s coach Baburam Nepali was adjudged the best coach and was awarded Rs 15,000. Rajesh Nath Adhikari of Central Region was declared the best player. Adhikari bagged a purse of Rs 5,000.



National Sports Council Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama and Nepal Hockey Association President Umesh Lal Shrestha gave away the awards to the winners.



Altogether six teams -- one each from five development regions and Army -- had participated in the five-day event organized by Parsa District Hockey Association.
