APF badminton kicks off

KATHMANDU, Jan 9: Raju Bishwakarma of Jhapa and Madhav Prasad Tiwari of Sindhupalchowk won their respective men´s singles matches of the Seventh Nationwide Krishnamohan Memorial Open Badminton Tournament that kicked off on Sunday at the APF Headquarters, Halchowk, Kathmandu.



Bishwakarma eased past Sifas Limbu of Sunsari 21-8, 21-10 while Tiwari had a third set 21-19, 19-21, 21-17 win over Suman Tandon of Kathmandu. [break]



Kumar Pun of Nawalparasi, Hari Kumar Parajuli of the hosts APF, Rajendra Khadka of Kathmandu and Dharma Bahadur Ghale of NID received walkovers.



In women´s singles, Jayalama Gurung of Nepal Police Club (NPC) eased past Sushila Shiwakoti of Jhapa 21-14, 21-15, Samjhana Sharma of Banke beat Sarita Tamang of APF 21-17, 21-4, Sabina Panthi of APF saw off Durga Sharma of Kailali 21-8, 21-6, Sujana Shrestha of APF beat Bindu Shrestha of Nawalparasi 21-5, 21-9, Samjhana Khaling of APF thrashed Juna Shrestha of Nawalparasi 21-3, 21-3 and Mina Shrestha of APF defeated Amita Giri of Jhapa 21-8, 21-4. Nangsala Devi Tamang enjoyed a walkover.



Meanwhile, Birendra Singh Bista and Siddhartha Sharma´s pair of Kathmandu, Rajan Paudel and Binod Adhikari´s pair of APF, Yomesh Dangol and Raju Bajracharya´s pair of Lalitpur, and Tikabir Rai and Ujjwal Dhala´s pair of Lalitpur won their respective men´s doubles matches.



Likewise, the pairs of Laxman Tiwari and Teknarayan Jha and of Kamal Shrestha and Chin Bahadur Shrestha of the hosts, and Kshitij Limbu and Rajendra Khadka of Lalitpur also won their respective matches.



In the U-17 boys´ section, Rabindra Shiwakoti, Raj Bahadur, Joseph Adhikari, Gautam Kathayat, Rajan Tamang and Pratula Maharjan emerged victorious.

Nangsala Devi Tamang and Ratnajit Tamang´s pair was off to a winning start in the mixed doubles.



Similarly, Jitendra Sharma and Durga Sharma´s pair, Ganesh Chand and Bina Tulachan´s pair, Sajan Kumar Tamrakar and Sabina Panthi´s pair, Ram Rai and Tirna Rai´s pair, and Bishal Pradhan and Samjhana Khaling´s pair also started on a winning note.



Earlier, APF IGP Sanat Kumar Basnet inaugurated the tournament that carries the highest cash prize of Rs 765,000 in Nepali badminton. The tournament features 11 events.
