“It was Dahal who did not deposit the money in the bank arguing they would have more bargaining power against the company for which Subedi worked if they kept 100,000 Riyal, received as insurance claim, with the embassy,” Ansari said at a press conference on Monday.[break]
The relatives of Subedi who died in Saudi Arabia in a car accident one-and-a-half years ago had complained of embezzlement as they did not receive the money even several months after the embassy received the insurance amount. The government recalled Ansari after Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority and Ministry of Foreign Affairs initiated an investigation against him.
Ansari said, before receiving the money from the insurance company through a legal battle, an agreement had been reached with the consent of the family of the deceased to provide 40 percent of the amount each to the lawyer and the car owner, and 20 percent to them.
“The insurance amount was kept safe with a person under my authority as the amount was yet to be given to the car owner and the lawyer,” he said. “I did not deposit the amount in my personal bank account.”
Ansari said he came to know that Dahal had not informed the foreign ministry about the insurance amount for more than eight months only after coming to Nepal.
“Whenever I enquired about the money, he [Dahal] would say that he had already written to the foreign ministry,” he said. The amount was deposited in the embassy´s account on January 17 after media reports indicted envoy Ansari for the embezzlement.
