AFC chief condoles Gyalsen family

KATHMANDU, July 26: AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam has sent his condolence to the family of young footballer Jigme Gyalsen Lama who died on the field earlier this month.



Fifteen-year-old Lama, an eighth-grader at Mangaldeep Secondary School, died while playing a match against Prabhat Secondary School on July 5 during the qualification round of the Coca-Cola Cup Inter-School Boys´ Football Tournament at the Chyasal Grounds, Lalitpur. [break]



"The passing away of a young, promising player is always a matter of deep sorrow and concern,” Bin Hammam said in a letter to ANFA, states the official website of AFC. “My heart goes out to the family of Jigme and I request you (ANFA President Ganesh Thapa) to convey my sincere condolences to the people he leaves behind. They are in my thoughts in this most testing time.”



It was reported that Lama died of cardiac arrest. He went for an aerial ball in the 30th minute of the match and fell unconscious. He was immediately rushed to the nearby B&B Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.



Lama came from the remote village of Trok in Gorkha district and had been living in the school hostel.



He is survived by his father. His mother died years ago.
