9 killed, 51 injured in road accidents

KATHMANDU, Jan 18: Altogether nine people died and 51 were injured in separate road accidents that took place in different parts of the country on Friday.



Four people died and 34 were injured when a bus headed for Kathmandu from Birgunj veered off the road and fell some 25 meters on the bank of the Trishuli River at Bangemod of Pida VDC-2 in Dhading district, according to our correspondent. [break]



According to Area Police Office (APO) in Gaujuri VDC, three bus passengers were killed on the spot whereas another was killed while undergoing treatment in Kathmandu. Of the total 4 deceased, three are Indian nationals.



The deceased have been identified as Pramila Devi Singh, 30, Khusiya Thakur and Jahir Hussain Ansari of India and the driver of the bus, Raju, according to Binod Ghimire, police inspector at the Area Police Office, Gaujuri.



Locals rescued 34 passengers and they are being treatment at Gajuri hospital and several hospitals in Kathmandu. The condition of seven passengers has been reported to be critical.



The police reports that the accident took place due to the negligence of the driver and dense fog on the highway.



Likewise, our Ilam-based correspondent Bhim Chapagain informed that three passengers including a one-year old girl were killed and seven injured when a bus heading for Ravi of Panchtar from Damak of Jhapa met with an accident due to break failure at Bhojo of Ilam district on Friday evening.



Chandiswari Rai, 70, and Birsana Rai, 50, of Bajho-4 and one-year old girl Prakriti Limbu, 1, of Sanischare-5, Morang died while being rushed to Damak for treatment, informed District Police Office, Ilam. Police have detained the driver, Tej Bahadur Magar.



In yet another accident, Tika Kumari Chaudhary, 27, of Chandranighapur died after being hit by an Indian number plate Bolero jeep (Br 05 Gi 5696) inside the compound of a house. According to District Police Office (DPO) in Rautahat, she was accidentally hit by the bolero when the driver was trying to start it.



The kin of the deceased staged demonstration and brought vehicular movement to a standstill in Chandranigahapur on Friday. The DPO informed that they have arrested the driver, Ram Balak Raya and impounded the jeep.



Meanwhile, a fourteen-year old girl, Nisha Baniya, was killed when a jeep (Ko 1 Cha 6649) carrying a wedding procession skidded off the road and fell 50 meters down at Rauta VDC-9 in Udayapur district. Ten people sustained injuries in the mishap, according to our Udyapur correspondent Maheshwar Chamling Rai.
