"Necessary vaccines have not reached this health post since mid-April," informed Suresh Prasad Kuswaha, in-charge of Lho Health Post.The health posts at Sirdibas, Chumchet, Chhaikampar, Bihi, Prok and Samagaun VDCs are also waiting for the vaccines. There over 150 children in those VDCs who are below one year of age and need regular immunization. Likewise, 792 children range in age from six-months to five years old. Those children have been deprived of immunization for DPT, BCG, measles, tetanus, and polio, among others, since the last five months.
The catastrophic 7.8 magnitude Gorkha earthquake of April 25 had triggered landslides and blocked dirt roads in Manaslu leading to northern parts of the district. The District Health Office (DHO) has not been able to transport the necessary vaccines to those VDCs as the debris left behind by lanslides are yet to be cleared, according to Amar Singh Pandey, vaccine supervisor at the DHO.
Health post in-charges of some VDCs said they have not received vaccines since the devastating earthquake.
The DHO officials said they were waiting for the delivery of vaccines to those seven northern VDCs by a helicopter. "Vaccines can be delivered to those places only through helicopter," said Pandey.
The vaccination program have been running smoothly in 53 other VDCs and two municipalities of the district.
