KATHMANDU, June 29: The first meeting of the parliamentary committee formed to monitor the implementation of the five-point deal has decided to summon Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal to brief the committee about the progress made so far in the peace process.

A meeting of the 17-member committee chaired by Speaker Subash Nembang on Wednesday took a decision to this effect.[break]

The meeting also decided to write a letter to the Special Committee asking the latter to immediately furnish details of the tasks done so far for the integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants.

Similarly the committee, as per the decision, will also write to the defense ministry to furnish details of the tasks completed so far to make the Nepal Army (NA) an “inclusive” institution.

“Then we will invite the prime minister to discuss the progress made so far in the peace process,” said Speaker Nembang.

He said that his committee would speed up its monitoring tasks as the non-implementation of the five-point deal would be a great setback for the peace process and constitution drafting.

The meeting has also decided to urge the signatories of the five-point deal to sincerely implement the deal and drive the peace process to a logical conclusion.

“We have been a month late in forming the committee. But we will now speed up our monitoring tasks. We urge the parties to the five-point deal to implement their commitments,” said Nembang. He said that the date for the meeting with the prime minister would be fixed after consulting the office of the prime minister.
