KATHMANDU, March 5: Police in the western Indian state of Gujarat claimed that they busted a fake currency racket by arresting eight in two days including five Nepali nationals, Express News Service from Surat reported Thursday.
The police have seized counterfeit notes of Rs 500 denomination with a face value of Rs 3.44 lakh from the eight alleged racketeers: four persons from Surat and Navsari on Monday, and as many people from Indore on Tuesday.
Two arrested with fake Nepali currency notes
"We have arrested five persons who belong to Nepal, while three others are from Bihar," said Navsari District Superintendent of Police Premveer Singh. "All the arrested had purchased these notes at half rates from one Sher Mohammed of Bada (sic) district in Nepal. We will take help of the Nepal police to locate Sher Mohammed.”
He further said that the arrested Nepalese nationals were earlier working as tailors and farmers.
The arrested have been identified as Afzal Nasari, a resident of Nepal, Shamim Ansari, Manzur Alam and Neelam Pandit (all residents of Bihar). The police had seized 55 counterfeit notes of Rs 500 denomination with a face value of Rs 27,500 and four fake currency notes of Rs 1,000 denomination.
