48 more return from Meghalaya

JHAPA, May 26: The number of Nepalis entering Nepal after fleeing Meghalaya of India has been increasing. On Wednesday alone, some 48 Nepali workers returned after receiving threats from Khasi community.



Of the 48 who entered Nepal on Wednesday, 11 were women. Most of them had been working in coal mines in Meghalaya for long. "We were compelled to return following terror of the Khasi community," police at Kakarbhitta quoted the victims as saying. [break]



Those who returned on Wednesday were originally from Sarlahi, Nawalparasi, Sindhuli and other districts. The police have started keeping records of those returning from Meghalaya after teh number of returnees started increasing.



Returnees said a sizable number of Nepalis have still been taking refuge in temporary tents in Meghalaya.



NHRC writes to India



Expressing its concern over attacks on Nepalis in Meghalaya, the National Human Rights Commission has drawn the attention of the National Indian Human Rights Commission, India, to human rights violations of Nepali-speaking community.



On Sunday, the national human rights watchdog wrote a letter to the Indian commission, asking it to take adequate measures to protect the rights of the Nepali-speaking community.
