39 players in initial training for SAFF

KATHMANDU, Oct 18: Nepal has started training camp for the upcoming SAFF Championship football tournament to be held in Trivendrum, India from December 23 to January 3. National team coach Patrick Aussems on Sunday called 39 players in the initial phase of training at the ANFA ground, Satdobato.

According to ANFA, the training camp will run for three days till Tuesday and resume on October 28 after Dashain holidays.In the preliminary squad, Kiran Chemjong, Bikesh Kuthu, Bishal Shrestha and Amrit Chaudhary have been selected as goalkeepers. Similarly, Ranjit Dhimal, Rabin Shrestha, Amit Tamang, Devendra Tamang, Jitendra Karki, Ramesh Dangal, Ananta Tamang, Aditya Chaudhary, Yuddha Shahi, Biraj Maharjan, Ajit Bhandari, and Dinesh Rajbansi are the defenders.

Similarly, the coach has included Jagajeet Shrestha, Sujal Shrestha, Biswas Shrestha, Rohit Chand, Heman Gurung, Rajendra Rawal, Shiva Shrestha, Bikram Lama, Bishal Rai, Yogesh Gurung, Deepak Rai, Bijay Gurung, Tanka Basnet, Tek Bahadur Budathoki as midfielders.

Binod Karki, Anjan Bista, Navawug Shrestha, Ranjan Bista, Anil Gurung, Bimal Gharti Magar, Karna Limbu and Bharat Khawas are forwards to be included in the list of 39. Injury plagued forward Jumanu Rai is the regular of the previous national squad not named in the preliminary list.

Three regulars of the national squad including skipper Sagar Thapa, Sandip Rai and Ritesh Thapa are currently in Nepal Police custody for investigation into alleged match-fixing. The players were arrested on Wednesday on the charge of fixing Nepal's international match under financial influence of bookies based in Malaysia and Singapore. Besides these three players, former Nepali international Anjan KC and Bikash Singh Chhetri were also arrested.
