386 VAW cases exposed in four months

KATHMANDU, Feb 20: Hundreds of cases of violence against women (VAW) have come to light within a four-month period, said a statement issued here Friday.



According to the statement issued by the Women Rehabilitation Center, an organization working for the rights of women, 386 cases of violence against women were exposed between September 17, 2008 and January 13, 2009. Rape, domestic violence including assault and battery and murder are some of the VAW incidents reported during the period.



The statement expressed concern over delay in passing a law against domestic violence. It also said that a culture of impunity has added to the incidence of VAW.



The rehabilitation center shared its findings amidst a press meet held in the capital. The statement has demanded a high-level mechanism to deal with all kinds of violence against women. It also demanded a law to deal with VAW.
