KATHMANDU, May 28: The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) has prohibited vehicular movement along 34 road sections in the Kathmandu Valley sensing that some precarious structures may invite human or other losses.

The traffic police enforced either complete or partial ban on vehicular movement in various 34 places in the capital city based on the damage caused by recent earthquakes to the buildings along the roads.

Superintendent of Police Posh Raj Pokharel, spokesperson of MTPD, informed that vehicular movements have been completely banned along various 12 road sections while only specified vehicles have been allowed to ply other 22 sections for over two weeks now.He said that the prohibited road sections have many buildings which have been severely damaged by earthquakes and may collapse anytime, killing people.

The traffic police has completely sealed roads from Hanagola Chowk to the western part in Kalimati, Bhagawanpau to Dallupul in Swyambhu, Bhagwanbahal to Sanchayakosh Building and JP road to Chattrapati in Thamel, Gomgabu to Baniyatar and Asthanarayan to Seshmatipool at New Buspark, Tyangal to Lagankhel in Mangalbazar, Bhandari Garment to Aakshadhara in Kapan, Chakrapath to Ganesh Basthi in Maharagunj, Tamishapakha to Raktashali in Janasewa and Ganeshthan to Medicare in Chabhil.

"In other 14 road sections, we have allowed light vehicles but prohibited heavy vehicles," said SP Pokharel. He said heavy vehicles have been banned along Ganeshnath-Mahadevthan road, road leading to Kuleshwar residential area, Pesticides Go down Area and Tankeshwarpul to Tahachal chowk areas in Kalimati, Nagaudobato to Police Beat and Naya Gate to Naya Bazaar roads in Kritipur, among other road sections.

He said that the MTPD has not only banned vehicles on the 36 road sections but also has been discouraging pedestrian movement as building demolitions works are being carried out in many of the banned road sections.

In the same way, the authorities have banned cargo vehicles from plying the Sukedhara-Ekantakuna section, GopiKrishna-Kapan-Saraswatinagar section, Satungal-Matatirtha, and Bakhabaar-Bode road section. However, other vehicles have been allowed along these sections.

"We have diverted routes for the prohibited vehicles. We have deployed a separate team of traffic police to ensure that vehicles do not move along the banned roads," said he.

He said that the damage to the road sections from Sinamangal to Airport and Lokanthali to Kausaltar area has also been creating obstructions for safe vehicular movement. The two sections had subsided by the April 25 earthquake.

Luckily, no accident has occurred along the two road sections.

The Department of Roads informed that it is making necessary preparations to repair the damaged portion of the roads immediately.
