Water recedes in Koshi

The flow of the Koshi river started to recede after hitting a five-year high of 339,405 cusecs Tuesday evening, according to our Itahari correspondent Amar Khadka. It was 246,725 cusecs when measured Wednesday evening, but danger remains.

Only 30 of the 55 gates at the barrage are open now but the danger siren has been blaring since Sunday. It will only stop when the water level falls below 150,000 cusecs.

A team led by chief of the Department of Water Induced Disaster Prevention office at Biratnagar, Dhruba Shrestha, went for a field inspection Wednesday, considering the likelihood of further erosion of river banks as the water level falls.

Shrestha said the water is putting extra pressure on some of the spurs at the barrage but there wasn´t any threat of erosion at the embankment. “The situation is normal right now. The people in the east can heave a sigh of relief as the water flow is gradually decreasing,” he said.

Meanwhile, the chief secretary of the government inspected the swollen Mahakali river in Bhimdutta Municipality Wednesday, according to our Mahendranagar correspondent Bikram Giri.

Chief Secretary Ghimire expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of effort on the part of the administration. “Start the control measures immediately,” he was heard telling technicians.

He also directed Director General of Water Induced Disaster Control Department Som Raj Dhakal to be present at the site until the erosion is stopped.
