World Wetland Day observed

KATHMANDU, Feb. 2: Nepal observed 40th World Wetland Day with the slogan—´Forest for Water and Wetland´.



At a function organized by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation Deepak Bohara said Nepal´s wetlands are directly linked with livelihood of people and for the government and the private sector should work jointly. [break]



General Manager of Forest Department Gopal Kumar Shrestha said that the existence of wetland will not remain in absence of forest.

 

Thus, several programmes are underway to conserve forests, he said.



Similarly, Director General of Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Krishna Prasad Acharya stressed the need for conservation of wetlands in the country.



At the programme, Dr. Bishnu Bhandari of ICIMOD, Rajendra Khanal of IUCK, Dr. Ghanshyam Gurung of WWF and Top Bahadur Khatri of Wetland Project said that more wetland areas should be declared.
