SARLAHI, Aug 27: For 45-year-old Sushila Devi Thakur of Sarlahi district, joining rights organization could literally save her life. Tramatized by threats and ostracized from community on accusation of witchcraft, Thakur had been knocking on the doors of rights organization for security.

Thakur then joined Women Rights Network to save herself from the threat by her neighbors in Bahadurpur village. She has been attending every function on women´s rights in the district, sharing her pain and asking for help. [break]

"Everybody assured me that nothing would happen to me. But situation is that I cannot stay safely in my village," said Thakur. She also informed that she had to take refuge at the police office to save her from villagers´ attempt to force her to eat human feces.

She has now left her village and is living in a house built in her farm away from the villagers. Thakur is accused of wielding black magic and blamed for the illlness in the village.

“If any cows or buffalos stop giving milks or if there was any problem with lactating mothers or if new born fell sick, I was blamed and was mistreated and manhandling,” said Thakur.

She also informed that the villagers had also threatened to banish anyone who come to help her. In the fear of being banished from the community even her close relative are reluctant to provide her with help in need.

According to women´s rights activist in the district, Rita Yadav, efforts are being made for rehabilitating Thakur. Incidents of violence against women on witchcraft charge has continued unabated in the southern part of the district. “Many cases go unreported as the victims choose not to report the incident to the police in fear of reprisal," said Yadav.
