Bimala Chaudhary won gold in girls´ 400 meters for Western Region with a timing of 1 minute 0.8 seconds while her teammate Prabha Chaudhary stood second clocking 1 minute 8.3 seconds. Sarada Kumari Thagunna of Eastern Region finished the run on third position.[break]
Western Region girl Krishna Chaudhary stood first in 200 meters sprint as she finished the dash in 27.5 seconds. Sanju Chaudhary of Mid-western and Mira Khadka of Central Region completed the race respectively on second and third position.
Anju Chaudhary won third gold for the Western Region from girls´ shot put with a distance of 11.45 meters. Chandrakala Lamgade and Manju Rai of Eastern Region finished the event on second and third position correspondingly.
With the three gold medals on the second day, Western Region leads the medals tally with six gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
Likewise, Mid-western Region won two gold medals on Monday as Shambhu Chaudhary won gold in boys´ 400 meters and Asharam Chaudhary clinched the title of boys´ high jump with a leap of 1.60 meters.
Binod Gurung and Nir Pratap Mahato of Western Region finished second and third respectively in boys´ 400 meters sprint. In boys´ high jump, Umesh Rai of Central Region and Prakash Nepali of Far-western Region remained on the second and third position respectively.
Meanwhile, Western Region and Mid-western Region reached the final of girls´ volleyball. Western Region thrashed Far-western Region 25-3, 25-13 in the semifinal and Mid-western defeated Central 25-11, 25-16. However, Central beat Far-western 25-20, 25-18 to secure third position in the event.
In boys´ volleyball, Far-western set up a final clash against Western Region. Far-western defeated Central Region 28-16, 25-20 while Western upset Eastern Region 25-14, 25-18 in the semifinals played at the National Sports Council (NSC) Covered Hall. Central struggled past Eastern Region 25-17, 11-25, 25-11 to claim third position in the event.
The three-day tournament, organized by NSC with the support of the Youth and Sports Ministry, will conclude on Tuesday.
GEMS thrashes Annapurna 15-0
GEMS thrashed Shree Annapurna Academy from Morang 15-0 in the opening match of the PABSON President Mega Cup Football Tournament held at the Dasharath Stadium on Monday.
Feng Lee Gurung, who was declared man-of-the-match, scored eight goals while GEMS captain Atul Gautam scored six goals. Mayur Thapa scored an own goal in the match.
GEMS scored eight goals in the first half and seven in the second half. Gurung opened the scoring for GEMS in the 12th and 16th minutes. Gautam scored in the 23rd minute to extend the lead. A minute later, Gurung completed his hat-trick. Gautam also scored his hat-trick in the first half with goals in the 31st and 34th minutes. Gurung then took his tally to four with another goal in the 35th minute. Thapa scored into his own net in the 28th minute.
The second half was played almost entirely in Annapurna Academy´s half as GEMS players continued to pile pressure. Gautam scored in the 47th and 51st minutes to complete his double hat-trick. Gurung followed suit with goals in the 58th and 59th minutes. GEMS added insult to injury as Gurung found the back of the net again in the 64th and 70th minutes and Gautam in the 66th minute.
The tournament was earlier inaugurated by Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal.
Altogether 12 teams are participating in the league-cum-knockout tournament.
Invitational basketball postponed
The organizers of an invitational basketball tournament scheduled to be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh have postponed the event. Nepal´s national team will also be participating in the tournament.
Altogether 15 players have been selected for the tournament and the final selection of 12 players will be held this week as the Invitational Basketball Championship is now scheduled to take place on July 26-28 at the same venue.
Before leaving for Dhaka, the national basketball team will play in the Mid Asia Qualifiers on July 14-15 in Delhi, India. Nepal´s national team will face Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan and South Asian countries in the qualifiers.
According to the head coach of Nepal Basketball Association (NeBA) Dinesh Nakarmi, the team is strong and they are ready to face any country. "We have a lot of time for practice and the team is ready for the qualifiers. But they will have to face tough teams this time."
Nepal had participated in the Mid Asia Qualifiers in 2005 where it had crashed out from the league round after losing all its matches.
Coach Nakarmi said that India, Afghanistan and Kazakhstan will be the tough teams in this year´s qualifiers. "The qualifiers will be a good exposure for the players and will help them to play in Dhaka."
Glacier, Emile enter T20 quarterfinals
Glacier School and Emile Academy confirmed their quarterfinal spots winning their respective matches in the Sixth SNB Memorial T20 Cricket Tournament on Monday.
Glacier defeated Brihaspati Vidyasadan by 116 runs victory at the Engineering Ground, Pulchowk while Emile Academy defeated Rajan Memorial by three wickets.
Winning the toss, Glacier elected to bat first and scored 198 runs in 20 overs losing six wickets. Jeevan Lamsal was not out on 88 runs off 68 balls with 12 boundaries while Purushottam Jha scored 52 runs off 37 balls. Shreejesh Sthapit and Bishal Shrestha took two wickets each for Brihaspati.
In reply, Brihaspati was bowled out in just 10.4 overs for 82 runs. Jha played a key role in restricting Brihaspati to a low total with four wickets in two overs, while Ram Krishna Jaiswal took three wickets. Abhushan Yadav scored 52 runs off 28 balls with 11 boundaries but that was not enough to guide his team to victory.
In another match, Rajan Memorial, electing to bat first, was bowled out for 74 runs in 15.3. Man-of-the-match Ayush Regmi took three wickets and Ayush Khanal also sent three batsmen back to the pavilion. In the run chase, Emile Academy reached the target of 75 runs in 12.3 overs losing seven wickets. Dipesh Jha was the highest scorer with 16 runs. Irfan Miyan took four wickets while Aryan Adhikari claimed three.
KCTC registers first win
Kathmandu Cricket Training Center (KCTC) on Monday registered its first victory over Millennium International Sports Club (MISC) from Delhi, India in the last three meetings of their friendly series.
KCTC defeated MISC by seven wickets in the match played at the TU Cricket Ground, Kirtipur.
Winning the toss, MISC opted to bat first and was bundled out for 129 runs in 38 overs. Praveen Nehra was the highest scorer with 36 runs. Milan Karki was the most successful bowler for KCTC as he took four wickets in six overs conceding 19 runs.
KCTC successfully chased the target of 130 runs in just 20.2 overs losing three wickets. Rajesh Pulami hit an undefeated 44 runs off 30 balls with seven fours and a six. Opener Abhaya Paudel and Sudhir Maharjan scored 33 and 32 runs, respectively.
The Indian team will play its fourth and final friendly match against the U-19 national team of Nepal on Tuesday.
NIMS enters semifinal
NIMS confirmed a semifinal berth in the girls´ category of the First National College Open Three-on-three Basketball Tournament on Monday.
With the help of nine points from Sanju Tamang, NIMS defeated Morgan 18-14 in Group B. NIMS will meet Saipal ´B´ in the semifinal. In the other semifinal, Morgan ´A´ will face Saipal ´A´.
In the boys´ category, National ´A´, Golden Peak, NIMS, Green Land Hunters, HIMS, National ´B´ and Innovative advanced into the quarterfinals.
