VP Jha calls for mobilizing youths

KATHMANDU, Aug 12: Vice President Parmanand Jha has pointed out the need of intensifying skills, knowledge and talents of youth for utilizing them in the productive sector.



Addressing a program organized to mark the 13th International Youth Day by the Ministry of Youth and Sports on Sunday, the Vice President stressed the need of developing socio-economic entrepreneurship in youth, guaranteeing employment opportunity to them and stopping them from going for foreign jobs.[break]



Poverty, illiteracy, practice of untouchability, gender and caste -based discrimination are the malpractices existing in the Nepalese society and youths should be mobilized to end such practices, said the Vice President, underlining the need of cooperation from the private and non-government sector as well to mobilize youths as an agent of change in the country.



Now the nation has ushered in the era of republic after political revolution and concerns of youths should be for leading the country towards economic progress, said the Vice President.



Honesty, discipline and hardship is a must for achieving economic prosperity, he said, and urged youths to be more disciplined and laborious to contribute to the economic development of the country.



Also speaking on the occasion, member of the National Planning Commission (NPC) Abdul Rahim Mikarani said the programmes related to youths are the top priority of the Commission. The nation can see economic progress within a short span of time if youths are mobilized for the cause of socio-economic development endeavors, he added.



Ministry´s Secretary Sushil Ghimire said the government has brought the ´National Youth Policy- 2066 BS´ into implementation with a view to guaranteeing basic rights of the youths and establishing their leading role in the nation´s development.



Ministry´s Joint-Secretary Shantiram Sharma said producing skilled manpower is the special priority of the Ministry. On the occasion, Youth Bulletin- 2069 BS´ was also launched.



The 13th International Youth Day is being observed throughout the country by organizing various programmes for a week under the slogan ´Partnership with Youths for the Construction of Sound World´.



August 12 every year is celebrated as the International Youth Day since 2000 AD as per the decision of the United Nations General Assembly in 1999. Nepal is observing the Day since 2004.



It may be noted that many youths are compelled to set out for abroad seeking employment opportunities every year. According to statistics, presently, over two million Nepali youths are in Gulf countries and other countries in connection with foreign employment.



Around 400,000 youths come to the labour market every year in Nepal. The Youth Policy has put the people from 16 to 50 years of age as youth whose population covers 40 percent of the total population.
