KATHMANDU, July 9: A group of unidentified people on Thursday evening murdered Chhavi Karki, a district leader of CPN-UML from Okhaldhunga. UML has accused the Maoists of the murder but the latter has denied the allegation.

According to a statement issued by UML central office on Friday, some people came at Karki´s home at Thulachhap VDC and brutally attacked him saying “aren´t you the one who often protest against the Maoists”.

“This is the latest incident in the series of attacks on innocent political activists by Maoists since they launched the people´s war,” said UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal said in the statement, adding, “Our party condemns such murders.”

The ruling party has urged the government to bring the culprits to book and take strict action against them. UML leaders claimed that Maoists targeted Karki, who is in his forties, as he was very popular in the district. He was fielded as the UML candidate from Okhaldhunga-1 in the parliamentary election in 1999.

However, the Maoist party has said the murder accusation is an attempt to defame the party. “Such propaganda is a part of conspiracy hatched by the reactionaries who do not want consensus among parties,” said a statement issued by Maoist Spokesperson Dina Nath Sharma. He has urged all concerned not to politicize the incident.
