KATHMANDU, Oct 15: Sales of two-wheelers in Bagmati zone has not picked up as expected inspite of promotional schemes launched by the dealers for festive season.

According to the registration data received from the Department of Transport Management (DoTM), registration of vehicles in Bagmati zone in August-September is lower by 1,146 units than the registration in July-August. [break]

In July-August, 4,761 units of bikes were registered in Bagmati zone alone whereas in August-September, 3,615 units were registered.

According to the dealers, the automobile market is going through recession for a year now and has shown no signs of picking up. Bagmati zone registers the highest number of automobiles compared to any other zones every month.

“Because this is a festive season, sale is better in September-October. But in comparison to the sale in same period of previous years, it is still low,” said Saurabh Jyoti, president of NADA.

Even though Nepal Automobile Dealers´ Association (NADA) tried to decrease the duty charged on bikes, the government did not decrease the 80 percent tax it levies on two-wheelers.

The government collected registration fees to the tune of Rs 111,942,151 in July-August and Rs 89,163,807 in August-September.

“Sales during the current fiscal year is still 20 percent lower than it was last year,” said Jyoti.

The festive offers provided by major players in two-wheelers market like Honda, Hero Honda, Bajaj and Yamaha will be valid till the end of October.
