Two die while celebrating holi

KATHMANDU, March 7: Two people died and four others were injured celebrating holi festival in Kathmandu Valley on Wednesday while a total of 141 motorcycles and four fourwheelers were impounded for drink-driving, police said.



The deceased have been identified as Simron Karki, 16, of Kadaghari, and Donik Shrestha, 8, a resident of Bhardakali, Hattigauda. [break]



“Both of them died after falling off the roof of their houses while playing holi,” said SSP Ravi Raj Shrestha, a joint police commissioner at Metropolitan Police Commissioner´s Office (MPCO), Ranipokhari.



Karki fell down from a three-storey building and died while undergoing treatment at B and B hospital, while Shrestha died at TU Teaching hospital during treatment.



Sahil Pathak, 10, of Shankhamul also fell off the top of his house and is undergoing treatment at civil service hospital, Baneshwar. Sujita Budhathoki, 6, of Kalanki, got injured while playing holi, and Sainyog Shrestha, 15, of Gongagu got injured when an unidentified group attacked him with Khukuri, police said. They are undergoing treatment at B and B hospital.



Mahesh Sharma met with an accident at Pepsicola, and is undergoing treatment at Kathmandu Medical College, Sinamangal.



In the meantime, police have arrested 665 people, out of which 655 were male and 10 female, from different parts of Kathmandu Valley for unsolicited smearing of colors, throwing of water balloons, use of dirty water and violating other instructions of police.



Earlier the MPCO, Ranipokhari, had introduced a ´special security´ arrangement for the holi festival warning people against drink-driving, driving motorcycles without helmets, hurling water balloons or other items and unsolicited smearing of colors.



A total of 2,240 police personnel were deployed in the valley to prevent any untoward incident during the holi festival.
