KATHMANDU, July 22: Two people attempted self-immolation at separate locations in Kathmandu on Tuesday, with one citing his inability to meet former King Gyanendra Shah and the other protesting restrictions on roadside vending.
According to the Kathmandu District Police Range, 27-year-old Bishal Tamang of Doramba Rural Municipality-1 in Ramechhap attempted self-immolation outside Nirmal Niwas after failing to meet the former king.

Police said Tamang poured petrol over himself in an apparent attempt to set himself on fire. Officers recovered the petrol and took him into custody before he could carry out the act.
After undergoing a health check-up and counseling at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Tamang was released. Police said the Jorpati resident told investigators that he had tried to meet the former king five times but had been unsuccessful.
In a separate incident, Jeevan Adhikari, a roadside vegetable vendor in Naya Bazar, Kirtipur, also attempted self-immolation.
According to police, Adhikari resorted to the act after the municipality barred roadside trading during office hours and permitted vendors to operate on footpaths only after 6 pm.
He complained that the municipality's rule had made it difficult for him to earn a livelihood. Police from the Kirtipur Circle detained him, counseled him, and later handed him over to his family.
