KATHMANDU, Jan 31: A brick kiln worker of Suryabinayak Brick Kiln in Machhegaun was allegedly beaten to death by two other laborers for failing to return the money he had taken purportedly for recruiting laborers for Uma Maheshwari Brick Kiln at Tinthana VDC, Kathmandu on Wednesday midnight.

The Metropolitan Police Crime Division with the help of local police has arrested the two -- Kul Bahadur Gharti Magar and Balaram Gharti Magar of Dang who worked at Uma Maheshwari Bric Kiln -- on the charge of murdering Sher Bahadur Gharti, 35.[break]

Sher Bahadur originally from Rajpur-9 of Dang had allegedly taken Rs 95,000 from the two laborers eight months ago. When Sher Bahadur failed to pay back the money he was brought to the kiln at Tinthana and beaten to death, according to police. But Sher Bahadur´s body was recovered from the Balkhu River located around 25 meters from the kiln.

"Locals had seen the body floating in the river and informed us at about 5:30 am," DSP Shekhar Khanal of Kalimati Metropolitan Police Circle said.

Quoting locals, he said that the three had drank alcohol in a hut near the kiln and were quarrelling over the money till late night on Wednesday. Following complaints and information from the locals, police were able to arrest the two from near the kiln.

Police said the two have confessed to beating Sher Bahadur to death. They, according to police, had used stick and hands.

"We asked him to either bring laborers to the kiln or return the money but he only turned aggressive and we were compelled to use force," police quoted the two as saying in the course of interrogation.

They also told the police that the money belonged to owner of Uma Maheshwari Brick Kiln who had given the money to hire laborers. They also said the kiln owner would use threat against them to bring back the money at the earliest.

Kalimati police said that the body was kept at TUTH for post mortem. The kin of the deceased are demanding compensation, and strick punishment for the guilty.
