On Friday night, 30 wild elephants from Bardiya National Park descended into a settlement of freed Kamiyas at Hikmatpur of Baliya-9 at a time when all villagers were sleeping.
Demolishing the houses belonging to Thaggu Chaudhary, Devi Lal Chaudhary, Sita Devi Chaudhary, Badhuram Chaudhary and Balaram Chaudhary, they drank locally made alcohol kept inside.
Soon after the alcohol´s reaction, the tuskers started their power show and chased villagers. Locals ran away puffing and panting to save their lives.
During this course, the pachyderm destroyed 40 makeshifts houses and paddy planted on 12 kattha of land.
The rampaging and tipsy elephants unleashed their terror for one and half hours. Panicked locals later ganged up and decided to face them.
But they still could not counter the menace. A team of police personnel was called in. This time locals with the help of police managed to chase away the animal burning fire, firing six rounds of bullets in the air and making noises.
