Title contenders crash out

KATHMANDU, June 17: The probable title contenders White House College and Triton College were thrown out of the tournament by NIMS and National Campus respectively in the ongoing White House Cup U-19 National Men´s and Women´s Basketball Tournament on Friday.



In the women´s category, host NIMS edged past White House by 38-37.[break]



White House had taken hold of the game in the first and second quarters 13-9, 14-7 but failed to maintain the 11-point lead after half time. White House lost the remaining two quarters 4-12, 6-10 but had a close shave as they managed to win by a single point margin.. Bina Nakarmi scored 12 points for the winning team while Mrinalini Shrestha scored 13 points for the losing team.



In the men´s category, National saw off Triton 51-39. Bikash Gurung scored 25 points for the winning team. Triton, full of star players, was not able to turn the tide on its side. Triton took the first quarter 6-4 but lost the other quarters 12-19, 7-12, 14-16. Triton´s key players Norbu Lama was out with five fouls and Pasang Sherpa had four fouls in his side which handed Triton the defeat.



In another quarterfinal match, Prime thrashed Kaski 62-36. Ayush Singh was the highest scorer with 18 points. Prime bounced back from the second quarter loss to register a 12-19, 4-21, 14-14, 6-8 win. Prime will meet National in the semifinal match in the boys´ category.



In the women´s category, NASA defeated CCRC 41-14 in a lopsided match. NASA took all the quarters 13-3, 9-2, 13-4, 6-5 in which Samiksha Neupane scored 21 points. With the victory, NASA fixed its semifinal clash with NIMS. In a low scoring and competitive match, Morgan beat Prime 16-11.



Samichhan Bista scored seven points to guide her team for victory. Both the teams did not add any points in scoreboard in the first quarter. In the remaining quarters, Morgan scored 5-4, 6-4, 5-3 to steer the game in its favor. Morgan will face Nobel in the semifinals. Nobel edged past Saipal 41-36 as it lead three quarters and lost one. Nobel scored 12-6, 12-10, 5-9, 12-11 against Saipal.



In the men´s quarterfinal, host White House lost its match against Morgan 60-40. Morgan scored 11-9 in the first quarter and lost the second 9-10.



After having a two-point lead, Morgan scored 17-4, 23-17 with the help of Saurav Shrestha´s 23 points. Hemanta Rai´s 26 points helped Sunsari set up a semifinal clash with Morgan. Sunsari thrashed NIMS 63-39 despite the loss in the first and second quarters 7-12, 18-19. Sunsari scored 25-3, 13-5 in the remaining quarters.
