Thapa, Shrestha into semifinals

KATHMANDU, March 7: Ram Thapa, Shiva Ram Shrestha, Mani Rai and Deepak Neupane advanced into the semifinals of the Surya Nepal NPGA Match Play golf tournament that kicked off Monday at the Royal Nepal Golf Club on Monday.



In the quarterfinals, Thapa defeated Jaya Ram Shrestha 2-1, Shrestha ousted Ramesh Nagarkoti 5-3, Rai struggled to beat Deepak Thapa Magar 1-0 and Neupane beat Deepak Acharya 1-0.[break]



Earlier in the first round, 16th ranked Jaya Ram pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament beating reigning Nepal No 1 Rabi Khadka 1-0. Ram Thapa entered the last eight defeating Purna Sharma 2-1.



Similarly, Shiva Ram recorded an easy 4-2 victory over Surya Sharma while Ramesh Nagarkoti edged past current season´s money leader Rupak Acharya 4-3.



Deepak Acharya and Sanjay Lama played the most exciting and tightly contested match of the day where the two were separated only after 21 holes. They were neck and neck until the third extra hole where Acharya left Lama behind with a par putt.



Deepak Neupane won 5-3 against Pashupati Sharma, while Dharan pro Mani Rai recorded the best victory of the round when he beat Rajan Thapa 5-4. Deepak Thapa Magar advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-2 win over CB Bhandari.



The top 16 pros -- based on the 2009-10 order of merit -- took part in the tournament organized by Nepal Professional Golfers Association under the sponsorship of Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd. The winner of the seventh event under the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2010-11 will receive Rs 50,000 while the runner-up will get Rs 30,000.



The third and fourth place players will get Rs 20,000 and Rs 15,000, respectively. The four losing quarterfinalists will receive Rs 10,000 each, while the eight pros eliminated from the first round will get Rs 5,000 apiece.
