Tarun Dal cadre injured in prison clash dies

SARLAHI, Jan 3: A Nepal Tarun Dal cadre, who was critically injured in a clash in Sindhuli jail, died on Thursday. Niraj Devkota, a resident of Kamlamai municipality-1 in Sindhuli, who was serving a jail term on the charge of murder, breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Bir Hospital in Kathmandu, according to inspector Dilip Jha.



The District Hospital of Sindhuli had referred him to Kathmandu for further medical treatment. [break]



In the same incident, another inmate, Riddhi Gurmachhane, was critically injured. He is undergoing treatment at Sindhuli District Hospital, informed Chief District Officer (CDO) of Sindhuli Keshab Raj Acharya.



The police said Devkota, who was in Sindhuli jail since May 14, 2012 had allegedly been bullying other inmates. This might have led to the clash, said the police.

The relatives of the deceased have vandalized the DAO and District Survey Office in Sindhuli, claiming the attack on Devkota was planned. Police had to fire 14 rounds of bullets in the air and 21 teargas shells to bring the situation under control.



The agitating relatives have shut down the district headquarters demanding action against the guilty.



A three-member probe committee led by Assistant Chief District Officer Keshab Raj Adhikari has been formed to investigate into the incident. According to Prison Office Chief Tara Prasad Poudel, the prison is facing a manpower crunch as staffers appointed for the prison have been transferred to public health office in Sarlahi.
