A meeting of the associations on Monday decided to organize protests programmes including general strike in the capital against the decision of the government to increase the price of petroleum products on the eve of festivals.
Following the meeting, General Secretary of the Youth Association Niraj Acharaya warned of bringing the country to a standstill if their demands were not met. He added that the a memorandum on the same would be handed over to the Prime Minister and the Supplies Minister.
The student associations have made public the protest programmes that range from open discussions on the road across the country from September 5 to torch rallies and general strike in the Valley on September 8.
The associations are all set to hit the streets as the government on Monday increased the price of petrol by five rupees per litre and that of kerosene and diesel by four rupees each. Similarly, the price of LPG or cooking gas has been hiked by Rs 55 per cylinder.
With this, petrol now costs Rs 125 per litre, kerosene and diesel Rs 97 per litre and LPG Rs 1,470 per cylinder. The price of domestic aviation fuel has been fixed at Rs 120 per litre.
