Our Taplejung correspondent Khagendra Adhikari reported that Federal Limbuwan State Council called a three-day strike in nine districts of Eastern Nepal to protest repeated term extensions of constituent assembly. [break]
Roads wore a deserted look from early morning. Passengers were left stranded with vehicles staying off the roads. The strike also affected preparations for Teej festival and people traveling to meet their fathers on to celebrate Kushe Aunshi that is observed as father´s day.
The council staged demonstrations Sunday. Sanjuhang Palungwa, the council´s chairman said the constituent assembly that has not been able to fulfill people´s mandate has lost its legitimacy. He said markets, shops, vehicles, educational institutions, industries, and government and non-governmental offices will not be allowed to operate during the strike.
The strike has affected Taplejung, Panchthar, Ilam, Tehrathum, Jhapa, Morang, Dhankuta, Sankhusabha and Sunsari.
Meanwhile, our Dhangadhi correspondent Dil Bahadur Chhantyal reports that Samyukta Loktantrik Parivesh enforced a general strike in the Far-Western region on Monday, demanding that the region remain undivided when a federal set-up is announced, and that the region be compensated suitably for neglect it has suffered so far.
The Seti-Mahakali strike affected transportation in Kailali leaving hundreds, who came from India basically to observe the festivals at home, have been stranded in Dhangadhi. Vehicles did not operate in Dhangadhi, Dadeldhura, Doti, Baitadi, Darchula, Achham, and Bajhang, among other districts.
Businesses were also shut in Dhangadhi, while schools remained closed.
